The sports teams that represent Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus are known as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Known as the "Birthplace of College Football" in sports, Rutgers hosted the first intercollegiate football game on November 6, 1869, defeating a team from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) 6 runs to 4.
The Big Ten Conference, which is sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), has 24 teams in the following sports: Rutgers Martial Arts, baseball, basketball, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, swimming and diving, wrestling, and volleyball. Rutgers is one of the first American schools to participate in intercollegiate athletics. In honor of the Rutgers University mascot, which was selected by the student body in 1955, the athletic programs compete under the moniker Scarlet Knights.
